Chile is one of the most fascinating and developed countries in Latin America. Its physical beauty- including the Andes Mountains, vast Pacific Ocean, Atacama Desert, Lake District, and Tierra del Fuego- is matched only by its warm and welcoming people.
KIIS Chile is an excursion-based academic program. We begin and end our journey in modern and vibrant Santiago, where students will discover the many flavors of this cosmopolitan capital. An extensive subway makes getting around Santiago a breeze, and free weekends provide ample time for independent travel.
From Santiago, we head north for several days to La Serena & Coquimbo, sister cities on the Pacific coast. We then travel east for a week to the stunning Elqui Valley, where we examine in detail one of Chile's chief economic exports: grapes. For example, we'll visit the Ovalle table-grape-producing region, a boutique vineyard, and the Capel Pisco distillery to study the impacts of globalization. We also visit the Mamalluca Observatory for a breathtaking midnight display of stars, planets, and galaxies. We conclude at the Pacific resort enclave of Vina del Mar and nearby Valparaiso, Chile's principal port and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before returning to Santiago.
Interdisciplinary in nature, the Chile program employs a Place-as-Text academic approach, which encourages students, often in small groups, to take an active role in the direction of their learning. This program includes guest lectures by local Chilean experts and intellectual and social exchanges with Chilean university students.
